Chartres Street Through the Lens
A moment on Chartres Street, held forever in light and shadow
This one-of-a-kind diorama begins with a single photograph — a luminous, acrylic-enhanced canvas image of the corner where the historic Cabildo meets the graceful Pontalba buildings. With the photographer’s permission, we stepped inside that frame and built the world outward in three dimensions.
The weathered walls of the Cabildo rise in carefully sculpted relief. The Pontalba’s iron lace and soft brick glow under a second painted perspective. A pink bicycle rests against a planter, its baskets overflowing with flowers. On the slate-tiled ground of Jackson Square, the photographer himself kneels in miniature clay, frozen in the exact posture of the original shot. A delicate fabric bellows extends from his camera, and a single LED streetlamp casts its warm, golden pool of light across the scene.
Beneath the diorama stands a tiny framed print of the original photograph, mounted on a tripod — a quiet nod to the moment that inspired it all.
The piece includes:
• A hand-sculpted section of the historic Cabildo
• An additional acrylic-paint-enhanced canvas perspective of the beautiful Pontalba building corner
• A detailed hand-made pink bicycle with flower baskets leaning against a sculpted planter
• A hand-sculpted clay figure of the photographer himself, kneeling exactly where he captured the original shot
• Individually painted and placed “slate” tiles replicating the real Jackson Square pavers
• A fabric recreation of a camera bellows to enhance the diorama subject
• A glowing miniature LED streetlamp that adds a perfect warm glow
A tiny framed print of the original photograph is displayed on a tripod displayed beneath the main piece — a beautiful meta touch for the collector.
Every detail was lovingly crafted to turn a beloved New Orleans memory into a tangible, illuminated work of art.
This is more than a miniature. It is a memory made tangible… a love letter to the soft light, the historic stones, and the enduring poetry of the French Quarter.
