Three brown pelicans cut low across the Gulf…wings stretched against the breakers

The sculpture is formed from a single slab of sinker cypress — ancient wood pulled from Louisiana waters and left with its natural history intact. A tall, weathered peak rises above the scene, dark with natural worm holes scattered throughout, while the lower portion has been carefully hollowed into a deep triangular window. Inside that recess the pelicans are carved and burned into true relief, their bodies lifting forward from the surface as if still in flight. Layered epoxy builds the waves and foam beneath them, catching light and giving the water a sense of constant movement.

There is a quiet tension in the piece: the raw, time-scarred cypress holding a moment of pure freedom. Louisiana’s state bird, the Gulf itself, and the old wood seem to meet in one sustained breath.
