From our studio in Folsom, Louisiana, this luminous Blue Heron Illusion Glass is inspired by a frequent, majestic visitor to our own pond: the great blue heron, a sleek and powerful bird whose massive wingspan and serene grace allow it to strike with effortless precision. Hand-painted with specialized European enamel glass paints that fuse permanently to the surface upon firing, the heron is captured mid-catch — long neck extended, beak piercing the water, a large silver fish glistening in its grasp. The scene glows with rich depth and lifelike intensity against an ocean-blue background of deep cobalts, soft aquas, subtle silvers, and metallic highlights, creating an illusion of poised, predatory elegance suspended in glass.
The round composition is framed in traditional lead came construction and accented by hand-twisted copper wirework that forms flowing, wave-like tendrils and supports. Faceted rhinestones are embedded throughout the ocean-blue field, catching light like scattered sunlight on water. Coordinating beadwork in cobalt blue, ocean tones, and metallic finishes drapes from the copper connections, culminating in a striking faceted cobalt crystal teardrop dangle finished with a dangling silver fish charm that echoes the heron’s prey. The piece is suspended from a custom copper hanging element and rests above a customized bowl base, making it an ideal accent for any window where natural light can animate the coastal scene.
