USS Lexington – Honoring a Veteran’s Legacy

A quiet tribute to service and memory.

Created as a deeply personal commission for an elderly Navy veteran whose stories of life aboard the USS Lexington filled his final years, this pyrography work on birch plywood measures 10” × 14”. The carrier is rendered with careful burning and layered pigments to capture its scale, deck activity, and the vast sea around it. Originally given as a print to the veteran while he was in care, the original is now available. It stands as both a portrait of a historic ship and a testament to the enduring power of memory and gratitude.

The piece was born from conversations with the veteran’s family, who wanted something that would honor his service and the stories he loved to tell. Every line and shadow was burned with care to reflect the dignity and power of the ship he served on.

Materials: Birch plywood, pyrography, layered pigments and specialty colored pencils.
